Frequency Modulation: Carson’s Rule

In an A-Level Electronics class, I was recently taught an approximation for the bandwidth of a frequency modulated signal

where $\Delta f$ is the ‘frequency deviation’ of the carrier signal and $f_m$ is the maximum frequency of the modulating wave. The approximation was not proved or expanded upon further, so I set to the internet to find out more.

Hansard (UK Parliament) Analysis

A couple of weekends ago, I took part in Rewired State Parliament 2013, and worked with a friend to run sentiment analysis algorithms on the last 80 years of Hansard (the written record of parliamentary debates).

Infinite Monkeys

As everyone knows, give an infinite amount of monkeys an infinite amount of time and an infinite number of keyboards and you’ll end up with the complete works of Shakespeare. Inspired by this, we set out to find Hamlet in Hansard.

Gateway to Research Hackathon: Similar Research Topics Writeup

Gateway to Research

At Rewired State’s recent Gateway to Reseach hackathon (in partnership with Research Councils UK), I helped work on an app showing relevant researchers and patents to small business startups.

To cut a long story short, one part of the app required taking a topic such as biodiesel production, and finding related topics and keywords (e.g. efficiency, solar cells). Quite a few people have asked about the algorithm behind this, hence this blogpost.

All code will be in Ruby, but it should be pretty self-explanatory to non-Rubyists.
